BRIEF    HISTORY The beginning of the organisation of the museum in Deva dates back to 1880, when was established “The Society of History and Archaeology of Hunedoara County”. The statutes of this society, approved towards the end of that year, took into consideration the establishment of a museum for preserving the archaeological vestiges, the historical documents, the numismatic and ethnographic objects, as well as the exhibits of natural sciences, which were found, collected or acquired on the territory of the Hunedoara county. Following this early initiative of the members of the above mentioned society, in 1882 is set up a collection of antiquities, ethnographic objects and ornithological exhibits. During the next years the archaeological profile of these collections became more prevalent, mainly due to the field researchers undertaken in the area of the Dacian Fortresses on the Orastie Mountains and a series of other archaeological sites, at Banita, Cozia, Campuri Surduc, Micia, Strei and Deva. After the Union of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania (1918), the Hunedoara County takes under his jurisdiction the museum of the “Historical, archaeological and natural history society of Hunedoara County”, as well as the library and the archive of this scholar entity. According to the Law of 1886 and the decision of the Hunedoara County Prefecture the museum is given the name “Museum of Hunedoara County” and its activity is focused on the entire territory of the county. On the interwar period the museum’s collections are enriched by the archaeological excavations undertaken at Zlatna – Corabia, Casolt, Hobita, Micia and Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa. The museum management was provided by a series of major personalities, authentic scholars in cultural and historic studies, like Teglas Gabor, Iosif Mallasz, and Octavian Floca. During its existence, the museum was organised in a series of venues, but since 1934 it was established in the historic building of Magna Curia. „Magna Curia”. |
